A "View" on YouTube Now Means Something Different
Since August 24, YouTube counts a view from the very first frame of playback. That applies to Shorts, long-form videos, podcasts and live streams. Before, formats were counted differently. Now one rule covers everything.
Here is what that looks like in practice. If someone hovers over your thumbnail and the video starts autoplaying, that's a view. If your Short starts playing in the Shorts feed and they swipe away, that's a view. A thumbnail that just sits on screen and isn't touched is still not a view.
The old definition of a view hasn't gone. It's now called an engaged view, which means someone clicked to watch or stayed past the opening seconds. If a viewer taps your thumbnail and starts watching, that counts as both a view and an engaged view.
YouTube says the rest of the system is unchanged. CTR, average view duration and retention are calculated the same way. The recommendation algorithm is unchanged. The Partner Program is unchanged, and it still runs on qualified views.
The Partner Program does have a separate change coming, and it's easy to mix the two up. It has nothing to do with the new view count.
From February 1, 2027, new applicants will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. YouTube says creators already in the program aren't affected by that change. Fan funding and shopping thresholds also stay the same.
One rule does reach existing partners. From February 1, 2027, a channel needs 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days to earn ads and subscription revenue on Shorts. Below that, the channel stays in the program and keeps earning on long-form. Shorts revenue sharing starts again once it crosses 10 million.
YouTube also says it's adding new ways to earn for channels below that Shorts line, like Shopping bonuses, brand deal incentives and boosts for growing trends. More details are still to come.
What This Means for You
- Expect bigger view numbers, and don't read every jump as growth. Any rise after August 24 is partly the new counting rule, not new fans.
- Use each number for its own job. Public views show reach when you pitch brands and collaborators. Engaged views, CTR and retention show what actually held attention.
- Open YouTube Studio and review the new Partner Program terms. YouTube says they take effect February 1, 2027. If you're a Shorts-first artist, check your 90-day Shorts views against the 10 million mark now.
As a Rapture partner, your music is already delivered to YouTube's Content ID, so you can earn when other creators use it in their videos.
